Not too long ago, a charming new furry resident moved into my HDB community. For those of you wondering, HDBs are Singapore's iconic public housing estates, home to the vast majority of Singaporeans – it's our quintessential dwelling! And honestly, the moment I saw this little fella, it got me thinking: these community cats are such a huge, undeniable part of our Singaporean identity!

My Lion Cub, with her boundless love for animals, immediately took a fancy to this new neighbour and, of course, begged to feed it. This simple request truly sparked a flood of memories for me. When I was a young Cub myself, you'd always find me encountering these adorable "stray" cats (though we now fondly call them community cats) at the local coffee shops. Throughout all my school years, from primary to university – even Nanyang Technological University has its own beloved campus cat! – these feline friends were just everywhere in our heartlands, weaving themselves into the fabric of everyday life.

And this, my fellow adventurers, is precisely what I want to share with you on Lion Passport: a truly unique, and wonderfully cost-free, way to experience Singapore. Because let's be real, how else are you going to truly experience Singapore as a LOCAL if you're only ever sold the glitz and glam of Orchard Road and Marina Bay Sands? Don't get me wrong, those iconic spots are undeniably stunning, but they're not where a typical Singaporean lives their everyday life.

If you're a cat lover, or simply a curious traveler yearning for an authentic glimpse of our beautiful Lion City beyond the well-trodden tourist paths, then it's time to ditch the predictable and venture into the vibrant heartlands!

Imagine a day soaking up the real local way of life. Start with authentic hawker fare – the kind you only find in the heartlands, often at half the price of those downtown spots. Then, ready for an adventure? I have the purr-fect place to recommend: Chong Pang in Yishun!

Why Chong Pang, you ask? Well, for the past three years, a dedicated Chong Pang resident has been tirelessly building incredible designer shelters for our beloved community cats. She was even recently featured in The Straits Times! This makes for an ideal half-day activity: simply roaming around Chong Pang, spotting these charming community cats lounging in their bespoke, artistic homes. It’s a delightful, heartwarming sight you won't find anywhere else.

And when hunger inevitably strikes from all that exploration, you're in the absolute right place! Head straight to Chong Pang Hawker Centre and grab yourself a nice, cool Sugar Cane drink to quench that Singaporean heat. As a Lion who literally grew up in Yishun, I can tell you firsthand this is where you'll find a fantastic variety of truly good local eats. Think delicious Hokkien Mee with that wok hei aroma, savory Wonton Mee that hits all the right notes, and my personal favourite, Orh Jian (that's Oyster Omelette, for the uninitiated, and trust me, it's a must-try!).

Oh, and a crucial word of advice: Singapore is hot, hot, HOT! 🔥 Especially when you're out exploring our charming heartlands. So, if you're planning a visit, make sure you're prepared for the heat. I highly recommend picking up one of these hands-free neck fans for yourself – it keeps you cool without tying up your hands, which is super convenient, especially if you're wrangling little ones. Speaking of which, your children will thank you for one of these personal fans that can easily clip onto their pram or stroller to keep them comfortable!

Like I always say, here at Lion Passport, I'm fiercely committed to #AuthenticReviewsOnly! So, ditch the crowded town, come explore our vibrant heartlands, and immerse yourself in a truly memorable, authentic Singaporean experience.

Yours Truly

Lion Mom 🦁
