A Family Afternoon at Marina Barrage: Kite-Flying, Cub Moods & a Gallery Surprise

Here’s what we learned from chasing wind, dodging sun, and finding unexpected cool indoors—without losing our toddler (or our minds).

Lion Dad finally made good on his promise to take our Cub kite flying—something she’d been asking about for weeks. We bought her a kite (she chose pink, naturally), and decided to head to Marina Barrage, one of Singapore’s most popular spots for flying kites and picnicking.

We arrived at around 2PM, which, in hindsight, isn’t the most ideal time with the sun blazing overhead. But with a toddler, we revolve around her schedule—and after lunch and a nap in the car, she woke up chirpy and ready to go.

The wind was strong and cooperative. With some guidance from Lion Dad, our Cub got her kite soaring on her first try. She was thrilled, wide-eyed with excitement, and we gave her the autonomy to take control of the string—though, of course, Daddy Lion hovered close behind. But it wasn’t long before the heat set in. Being an open space, Marina Barrage offers little to no shade. The sun’s glare made it hard for her to see the kite clearly, and before we knew it… mood spiraled.

We reeled the kite in and pivoted—because with toddlers, that’s what you do.

And that’s when we stumbled across the Sustainable Singapore Gallery, tucked inside the barrage itself. Somehow I didn’t know it existed (maybe this Lion Mom hasn’t left her den in a while?). But it was free, air-conditioned, and full of tactile learning exhibits. Most importantly—it had embossing stamp stations in each section, which kept our Cub engaged the whole way through.

If you’re planning a visit, here are a few things to note:

– Arriving earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon is best to avoid the heat

– Bring your own kite, picnic mat, and sun protection

– The Sustainable Singapore Gallery is closed on Tuesdays

No video allowed, but photos are permitted

– The gallery is surprisingly toddler-friendly with interactive elements

Marina Barrage may be one of the more obvious spots for a family day out—but there’s a reason it’s stood the test of time. The views are stunning, the wind is your friend, and on a good day, you might just find a gallery that makes your toddler forget the heat.
